The SP1000M is the baby brother to Astell&Kern’s A&ultima SP1000 Cu and SS portable player, regarded as one of our flagship players with it’s ultra fast responsiveness, excellent build quality and impressive sonic capabilities. On paper there are a few differences with the new M or Mobile version of this flagship player. It seems that the weight of the Mobile version has been drastically changed with over 100g cut off the players weight, providing a greater amount of portability. The internal storage has been halved and the size has been reduced to provide a more comfortable product in the hand. With this the size of the screen has been reduced to 4.1 inches down from 5 on the standard SP1000, however the clarity of the screen means that the interface is still extremely functional and easy to use.
With these few changes from the bigger brother it makes the Mobile SP1000 somewhat of an amazing value player. The ability to use TIDAL streaming alongside the option of being able to load your own streaming app, means that you will never be without your favourite music. The built in memory has been halved and shrinks down to 128GB, however the SD Card can still hold a maximum of 512GB.
Power has been slightly changed to accommodate the difference in size, however for most earphones the M has plenty of juice to drive them. If you are looking to power a headphone then it is worth noting that rather bizarrely the balanced 2.5mm output on the Mobile version is slightly more powerful than the SP1000 Cu and SS variants.
