K13 ESS

The FiiO K13 ESS is a compact desktop DAC and headphone amplifier that also works as a preamp, built around two of ESS’s flagship ES9039Q2M chips. If you want one tidy box on your desk that can drive almost any headphone and feed a pair of active speakers or a power amp, it ticks a lot of boxes.

I already stock the K13 R2R. This version shares its idea but uses ESS conversion instead of a resistor ladder. If you’re deciding between the two, that’s a conversation worth having with your own headphones in mind.

Dual ES9039Q2M DACs

ESS’s fourth-generation HyperStream architecture is designed to lower internal digital noise, and FiiO talks about a richer presentation on a cleaner, darker background. Over USB it handles PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512, with coaxial and optical inputs for other sources.

Power to spare

From the 4.4mm balanced output you get up to 2400mW per channel into 32Ω, and over 1200mW from the 6.35mm output. That’s plenty for sensitive IEMs and demanding full-size headphones alike, and three gain levels with separate volume curves help you find the right range for each.

The whole signal path is fully balanced, from DAC through to headphone amp. Power comes from a built-in 30W supply, with a separate 12V DC input if you want to experiment with an external linear supply later.

Auto EQ and LDAC Bluetooth

An XMOS XU316 USB platform brings a 10-band parametric EQ with FiiO’s Auto EQ, so you can dial in a headphone profile with one tap and fine-tune from there. Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC, AAC and SBC means your phone can stream to it without a cable.

Thoughtful design

The unibody aluminium case has a small “skylight” window into the DAC section, a clear display that won’t suffer burn-in, adjustable RGB lighting that indicates sample rate and a 1 to 99 minute sleep timer.
